The Role of Social Robots in Enhancing Social Interaction and Communication Skills in Children with Autism: A Descriptive Review

Abstract

This descriptive review study aims to examine interventions involving social robots that aim to enhance social interaction and communication skills in children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), focusing on empirical research published between 2015 and 2025. The study evaluates the contribution of social robots to the development of social skills in children with ASD by analyzing the types of robots used, their roles and autonomy levels, intervention contexts, targeted social and communication skills, research designs, and factors influencing the effectiveness of the interventions. A systematic literature search was conducted in the Scopus and ULAKBİM databases, and 20 studies were analyzed in detail according to the inclusion criteria. Findings indicate that social robot-assisted interventions generally contribute positively to the development of fundamental social skills in children with ASD, such as eye contact, joint attention, gesture imitation, and bidirectional communication. The study highlights the importance of planning social robot-assisted interventions in conjunction with human support, considering the individual characteristics of children and adapting to the relevant context.

Öz

Bu betimsel çalışma, 2015–2025 yılları arasında yayımlanan, Otizm Spektrum Bozukluğu (OSB) tanısı almış çocuklarda sosyal robot destekli sosyal etkileşim ve iletişim becerilerini geliştirmeye yönelik müdahaleleri incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Çalışmada, sosyal robotların OSB’li çocukların sosyal beceri gelişimine katkısı; kullanılan robot türleri, robotların rolleri ve özerklik düzeyleri, uygulama bağlamları, hedeflenen sosyal ve iletişim becerileri, kullanılan araştırma modelleri ve müdahale etkililiğini artıran/sınırlayan faktörler açısından değerlendirilmiştir. Sistematik literatür taraması Scopus ve ULAKBİM veri tabanlarında gerçekleştirilmiş ve belirlenen dahil etme kriterlerine göre 20 çalışma detaylı şekilde analiz edilmiştir. Bulgular, sosyal robotların OSB’li çocukların göz teması, ortak dikkat, jest taklidi ve iletişim gibi temel sosyal becerilerinde genel olarak olumlu gelişmeler sağladığını göstermektedir. Çalışma, sosyal robot destekli müdahalelerin, insan desteği ile birlikte planlanarak çocukların bireysel özellikleri ve bağlama uygun şekilde düzenlenmesinin önemini vurgulamaktadır.
