Examination of Smartphone Addiction in Terms of Generation and Gender Variables

Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine whether individuals’ levels of smartphone addiction differ according to generational cohort (X, Y, Z) and gender (female, male). Employing a quantitative research approach and a 3x2 factorial design, data were collected from 434 individuals aged between 18 and 65. A personal information form and the Smartphone Addiction Scale – Short Form were used as data collection instruments. Prior to analysis, assumptions such as normality and homogeneity of variance were checked. Subsequently, two-way analysis of variance (two-way ANOVA) was conducted. The results revealed a significant main effect of generation on smartphone addiction scores (F(2, 428) = 14.88, p < .001, η² = .065). According to Bonferroni post hoc test results, individuals from Generations Z and Y had significantly higher addiction scores than those from Generation X. However, the main effect of gender was not statistically significant (F(1, 428) = 3.25, p > .05), indicating that smartphone addiction levels did not differ substantially between male and female participants. Furthermore, the interaction effect between generation and gender was also found to be non-significant (F(2, 428) = 0.48, p > .05). In conclusion, the study found that smartphone addiction levels differ significantly across generations, whereas gender and the interaction between generation and gender do not have a significant impact. These findings suggest that digital addictions may be shaped by generation-specific psychosocial dynamics and that technology usage habits vary with age.
